Spur Corporation welcomed President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement on 17 June 2020 to open trading for sit-down restaurants. The restaurant industry has been hit hard by the national lockdown and the return to business will enable thousands of people to earn a living and support their families.
“We’re pleased with the announcement as the coronavirus pandemic has had a catastrophic impact on our franchisees and the industry as a whole,” said Pierre van Tonder, CEO of Spur Corporation. “The minimal operations which began in May for deliveries, followed by takeaways in June, allowed a fraction of our franchisees to start earning some kind of revenue. This, of course, is nothing compared to our core business of serving customers sitting down. We’re looking forward to picking up the pieces with our franchisees in welcoming patrons to our restaurants and serving them great meals.”
Spur Corporation will await further clarification from government on how the regulations and protocols will work, and specifically when we can start operating our franchised sit-down restaurants.
We would like to reassure our patrons that their safety, health and wellbeing is our top priority, and we continue to take every precaution across all our franchised restaurants to ensure the safety of our patrons and staff. We have implemented the World Health Organisation and SA health authorities’ best practice guidelines for all franchised restaurant employees.
Our franchised restaurant employees have received additional training to understand all the risks of the coronavirus and to make sure that they observe the highest possible hygiene standards in our kitchens and serving areas. Stringent hygiene and sanitising protocols will remain in place across our food production chain.
Van Tonder had a special message for South African food-lovers: “I would like to thank you for your loyalty to our home grown brands. We cannot wait to serve you again and create outstanding memories!”
The Spur group’s brands include Spur Steak Ranches, Spur Grill & Go, Panarottis Pizza Pasta, John Dory’s Fish Grill Sushi, RocoMamas, RocoGo, The Hussar Grill, Casa Bella and Nikos Coalgrill Greek.
