Shoprite Zambia has expanded its local sourcing of fresh avocados through a partnership between its fresh produce procurement and distribution division, Freshmark, and the Lusaka Avocado Multipurpose Cooperative Society (LAMCS) that represents approximately 500 farmers across the country.

The partnership was launched in 2025, with commercial supply from LAMCS commencing during the 2026 avocado harvest season, when six growers met Freshmark’s size and quality specifications and delivered the first 1.3 tonnes of locally grown avocados.

As orchards mature and more cooperative members meet the required standards, participation and supply volumes are expected to increase.

The first deliveries also formed part of LAMCS’ induction into Shoprite Zambia’s procurement system, with Freshmark providing growers with practical guidance on product specifications, grading requirements and post-harvest handling standards.

For growers, having access to Zambia’s largest retailer provides a reliable route to market, enabling investment in production, improvements in quality and the expansion of farm operations. The partnership has also increased demand for labour to sort and grade avocados ahead of delivery.

Freshmark Zambia already sources fresh produce from 126 registered local farmers, with the avocado initiative forming part of its broader efforts to strengthen homegrown supply, including opportunities in categories such as butternut.

The initiative also aligns with Zambia’s agricultural development priorities, including the promotion of high-value crops under the Comprehensive Agricultural Transformation Support Programme.
