RFG Foods Prioritises Food Security this Mandela Day

RFG partnered with Ladles of Love this Mandela Day to make a difference to thousands of people who have been affected by food insecurity and hunger.

“Food insecurity is an increasing concern in South Africa, with many of our communities either suffering from hunger or malnutrition, which has been worsened by the pandemic and by the loss of jobs, as well as the difficult economic situation we currently find ourselves in,” says Job Mpele, Commercial Director at RFG Foods.

According to a recent study about 11% (6.5 million) of South Africa’s population is hungry and food insecure, with this percentage changing per province.

“We believe that no one should have to go to school, work or to sleep hungry, which is why we – as one of South Africa’s leading food producers – are a proud supporter of Ladles of Love,” says Mpele.

To spotlight this issue, Ladles of Love is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the largest food can mosaic by creating a giant mural of Nelson Mandela at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) and the South African Flag at Nelson Mandela Square in Johannesburg on 18 July 2022. To break the record, the organisation needs 100 000 food cans and asked the public to support the record-breaking attempt by purchasing canned food for the cause, volunteering at the event, or by donating to the charity.

RFG donated over one third of cans needed to break the record which will be donated to communities in need.

“We couldn’t think of a more amazing way to bring awareness to food insecurity and hunger in South Africa,” says Mpele. “As a responsible food business, we are committed to helping end this plight for good by improving the livelihoods of those in need in our immediate communities.”

This year the call to action for Mandela Day as directed by the Nelson Mandela Foundation is to “do what you can, with what you have, wherever you are” by participating in sustainable interventions with lasting impact.
