The first halaal Checkers store in the Western Cape has opened in Athlone, Cape Town – offering shoppers a new destination for premium halaal products, fresh food and local favourites, within a culturally inclusive retail experience.
Checkers Foods Crawford created 70 job opportunities within the local community, including 26 new positions.
Working closely with the Muslim Judicial Council of South Africa (MJC), the 1 000m² store is fully halaal-certified across all departments, ensuring peace of mind for customers.
A carefully curated selection of sought-after brands and products are on offer, including Exquisite Cakes’ decadent cakes and sweet treats, Bibi’s Kitchen’s Cape Malay specialities, savouries and frozen foods, and pre-sliced, halaal-certified cold cuts and deli meats from Goodhope Meat.
Also available are Daily Dippers’ handmade biscuits and chocolate-dipped treats, Just Biscuits’ homemade-style butter biscuits, Karak Tea’s spiced tea and chai latte mixes, Maverick & Jane’s gourmet popcorn and premium Ghee products. Freshly made koesisters, sourced from a local neighbourhood business, are available every Sunday, bringing an authentic taste of Cape Town to the store.
The fresh food offering includes a bakery, hot and cold foods deli, fresh fruit and vegetables, sushi, hamburgers and coffee, while shoppers can also find an extensive cheese selection, free-range chicken, fresh flowers, frozen crustaceans, frozen desserts, snacks and treats.

The Athlone store follows the opening of KwaZulu-Natal’s Checkers Foods Cowey Park in Essenwood, Durban as well as Saxony Westwood Mall in Westville, the country’s largest halaal Checkers supermarket.
